Year 5 Art trip Epsom College

Some 25 Year 5 pupils from Brambletye School in East Grinstead took part in a John Piper-inspired workshop in the Art School today.

The one day workshop, led by Head of Art, Katie Lenham, gave the young artists the opportunity to learn more about the work of Old Epsomian artist John Piper.

Accompanied by Brambletye Head of Art, David Holden, they examined the John Piper artworks on display, studying his layering of materials, manipulation of composition and use of colour to create atmosphere and ultimately to communicate his response to a building or place.
Split into three groups, the pupils then toured the College grounds, gathering information and recording their reactions to the environment through drawing with watercolour pencils, photographing, writing and making rubbings of textures and patterns.

Returning to the Art School, they worked around three different activities, including mono-printing, Photoshop and collage and mixed media, before combining their efforts into group compositions.
The session concluded with the children's collages displayed on the Art School lawns.
